Air Fryer Portobello Mushrooms
These Air Fryer Portobello Mushrooms are easy to cook in the air fryer. They get toasty on the outside, but stay juicy and soft on the inside.

I love portobellos because they’re meaty and savory; this recipe takes mushrooms to the next level in taste, texture and flavor. More importantly, you only need three simple ingredients.
Why You’ll Love It
- These mushrooms can be served as a main dish or a side dish that can be served anytime, because they go with so many different things. Serve them as a vegetarian main dish or sliced alongside some chicken and veggies.
- The air fryer ensures that each portobello mushroom receives uniform heat, resulting in consistent cooking throughout. No more worrying about unevenly cooked mushrooms – every bite is a perfect blend of texture and flavor.
- Savor the rich, earthy flavors of the mushrooms without all the work of preheating the oven and the added stress of a messy kitchen.
Helpful Tips
- Mushrooms require cleaning before use, but they should not be washed as excess water in the mushroom affects cooking. Instead, you can clean the mushroom with a damp cloth by gently rubbing the entire surface. Just try to avoid breaking the skin.
- The thickness of your mushrooms and your desired level of tenderness will determine the cooking time. If you like them to be more or less cooked, just keep an eye on them and take them out when you think they’re tender enough for you.
- You don’t need much oil when making Portobello mushrooms; little oil is needed to get the right taste and look. Since they tend to soak up oil when it’s poured on, resist the urge to add more.

I made these for my girlfriend last night. She was impressed. Thanks!!
What is the best way to tell if they are done?
You are looking for the mushrooms to brown and soften. I always poke it with a knife to check for tenderness.
I’m hooked on these air fryer portobello mushrooms!
Thanks Owen, so are we!
Can I marinate the portobello mushrooms before air frying them like I would a steak?
Mushrooms act like sponges so they will soak up whatever you put on them. If you are going to marinate them I would suggest not totally submerging them in the marinade. They will get waterlogged and it will take longer for them to cook.
I have been trying to replace meat in my diet as much as possible. These mushrooms are a healthy and satisfying option.
Good recipe.
Thanks Shelley.
